April Outstanding NHPO Member
The outstanding NHPO member for April is Sonia Ochoa-Gonzales. Sonia is a Vice-President for Sterling
Bank's Alemda Branch. She joined the NHPO Executive Board in 2007 as the
Treasurer. A few months later, she became Vice-Chair of the Houston Chapter. Since her inception on
the Executive board, Sonia has contributed tremendously to NHPO. She was instrumental in organizing the
2007 NHPO National Gala. The Gala attracted over 700 attendees and raised funds for the NHPO Student
Chapters and Houston Youth Group. One of the initiatives led by Sonia was the creation of the NHPO Youth
Group. The NHPO Youth Group is designed to give students an opportunity to learn to become leaders in
their community at a young age.
In addition to volunteering her time to NHPO, Sonia has also served other organizations such as Tejano
Center for Community Concerns, Real Estate Association Latinos, Denver Harbor Civic Club, East End
Chamber of Commerce, Credit Coalition of Houston, Hispanic Women in Leadership, and Beginning Experience a
Catholic Ministry. Due to her outstanding contributions to the Hispanic community, Sonia was named the
NHPO 2007 Member of the Year.
